Currently, the openings in CRAI include: PhD students, masters, master/undergraduate interns, undergraduate/master volunteers. For who would like to participate in the cognitive robotics & AI research with high-quality publication expectation, please feel free to contact Dr. Liu.
1. For undergraduates and graduates in Kent State U, who want to find an thesis advisor or participate in the research, please send Dr. Liu an email with your motivation and CV, to set up a time to meet with Dr. Liu.
2. For Ph.D admission, short-term scholar visiting, please see the ad below.
fully-funded Ph.D. positions, master and summer interns in Cognitive Robotics and AI Lab, Kent State University, USA
Applications are invited for fully-funded Ph.D. positions and several summer interns within the Cognitive Robotics and AI Lab (CRAI) of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, the Kent State University at Ohio USA, in Fall/Summer semester.
The introductions of the Kent State University and Lab director Dr. Rui Liu are attached at the end of this ad.
Lab Mission
The CRAI Lab is newly established in 2019 by Dr. Rui Liu (homepage https://ruiliurobotics.weebly.com/), aiming to conduct world-class cognitive robotics research -– designing the “Mind” for robotic and AI systems for seamless cooperation with a human. Robot mind is cognitive models based on AI algorithms, cognitive science and neuroscience). We envision that with cognitive models, robotics can have self-awareness and self-behavior diagnosis, also understand human attention and environmental risk, and can build a trustworthy relation with humans and other robotic systems. The applications include Human-UAVs teaming, daily assistive robots, medical AI systems, and intelligent manufacturing.
Research directions
1. Cognitive AI and Robot Cognition Modeling. It is about theoretical models for robot self-awareness design, attention and knowledge learning and transfer.
2. UAV Teaming. It is about the design of practical multi-UAV systems, using intelligent control and learning methods to plan paths and formations.
3. Human-Robot Interaction. It is about the design of practical cooperated systems, using learning methods and user behavior study to explain intentions and correct behaviors, mentally calibrating the human and the robotic systems.
Candidate Preference
The Ph.D. students are expected to involve in one or two research directions listed above, with top-tier publication outcome. Candidates with the following backgrounds are preferred.
1. Highly self-motivated.
2. Master degree in Robotics, AI, CS, EE, Control, Mechatronics, Automation or Information Systems.
3. Concrete knowledge on robot control, machine learning (CNN, RNN, DRL, GAN), UAV models and math.
4. Hands-on project experience in robotics, UAV and AI; publications in Robotics and AI will be a plus.
5. Experience in Robot Operation Systems (ROS); Skilled in one programing language: python, matlab or C++.
6. Excellent English in reading, writing and speaking; Excellent TOEFL and GRE score.
Apply
For anyone interested, please send your cv and any demonstration materials, such as papers, drafts, patents and project reports, to ruiliu.robotics@gmail.com (Dr. Rui Liu) with subject “[CRAI phd application]” and also with a brief intro of yourself and motivation. Thanks.
Introduction of Kent State University
https://www.kent.edu/cae
Kent State University, a top-ranked national public research university with eight campuses in Northeast Ohio, seeks a dynamic, strategic and collaborative leader to serve as its next president. As the university’s 13th president, the successful candidate will assume leadership of the 109-yearold institution at an important stage in its history – capitalizing on its great momentum and strong leadership while providing visionary direction to continue the university’s rise among top-tier national research universities.
Kent State is a global community of learners whose dedication and discipline spark epic thinking, innovation and discoveries that better our world. The Kent State presidency is an extraordinary opportunity for a motivated leader with a desire to inspire our university community to even greater achievement.
Ranked in the first-tier list of Best National Universities by U.S. News & World Report, Kent State is experiencing a rising trajectory of distinctiveness and success. More than 38,000 students, more than 6,600 employees and 245,000 alumni form a dedicated and tightly knit university community bound by a common history, and a common pursuit of passion, purpose and excellence. Serving students from throughout Ohio, across the nation and around the globe, Kent State is Ohio’s third-largest university; Northeast Ohio’s leading public research university; and one of the nation’s largest university systems. Kent State’s eight campuses give the university an unparalleled ability to reach and serve the citizens of Northeast Ohio.
The College of Aeronautics and Engineering’s flight training program is recognized by major airlines and the U.S. military as a world-class flight school and one of the best aeronautics programs in the country. Our graduates can be found around the world, and the Kent State University Airport was designated Airport of the Year by the Ohio Aviation Association.
Introduction of the Lab Director

Rui Liu is currently a postdoc at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, working with Prof Katia Sycara. He got his Ph.D. degree from Colorado School of Mines at 2018 spring and his mast degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Before coming to US, Rui was a research engineer in the Chinese Academy of Science. His research focuses on cognitive understanding for self-reflective robotic systems in dynamic environments. He has finished more than 20 high-quality publications and patents. He currently serves as a committee member or reviewer for more than 15 impactful journals/conferences, including top robotics conferences AAMAS and ICRA. In ICRA 2015, his work “robots learn commonsense from web” was nominated as three best conference paper awards.
