Lab Director
Rui Liu, Ph.D. (GoogleScholar)
E-mail: ruiliu.robotics&gmail* (&=AT, *=DOTcom)
Interests: Cognitive Robotics, AI Transparency, Multi-Robot Systems
Rui Liu is an assistant professor (July 01 2019~now) at College of Aeronautics and Engineering, Kent State University, Ohio, USA. He directed the Cognitive Robotics and AI lab (CRAI) for Designing Embodied AI and Robotic Systems by using energy-efficient onboard hardware (e.g., AI Chips, Controllers, GPUs),, and latest Airtificial Intelligence (e.g., Neural Networks, Large Language Model, Quantum Reinforcement Learning). Before this, Rui was a postdoc, advised by Prof. Katia Sycara, in The Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, PA, USA. Advised by Prof. Xiaoli Zhang, in the Intelligent Robotics and Systems Lab, he received Ph.D. degree from Colorado School of Mines, CO, USA, in 2018. Advised by Prof. Zhiyi Zhang, Rui Liu graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, at 2013 Feb. In 2013, Rui was a research engineer doing control research at Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), China. During his Ph.D, Rui also implemented the robot cognition models to control quality in metal 3D printing, working with Prof. Aaron Stebner in the world-leading metal AM research center ADAPT, CO, USA.
Dr. Liu has finished more than 50 top-tier publications. He currently serves as the Associate Editor in prestigious robotics and AI journals and conferences, such as IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (R-AL), ICRA 2022, IROS 2021 and committee member for AAAI, AAMAS, MRS; he is also a reviewer for some high-impact journals/conferences and US. National Science Foundation. In the leading robotics conference IEEE ICRA 2015 and IEEE RO-MAN 2019, his works have been nominated as the best paper award. His robotics and UAV research have been funded by US Air Force, National Science Foundation, and Ohio Government Fundings.
